All that makes a person a true Christian is the work of the Holy Spiritโ€”beginning with the miracle of the new birth (John 3:3) โ€œJesus answered and said to him, โ€˜Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.โ€™โ€ย (John 3:5โ€“8) โ€œJesus answered, โ€˜Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, โ€œYou must be born again.โ€ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.โ€™โ€ย (Titus 3:5) โ€œnot by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,โ€

It is the Holy Spirit who awakens us, convicts us, regenerates us, and empowers us to do the will of God.ย (1 Corinthians 12:3) โ€œTherefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.โ€ย (John 16:8) โ€œAnd when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:โ€ย (Romans 8:13โ€“14) โ€œFor if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.โ€ย (Galatians 5:16) โ€œI say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.โ€

Without being born again, a person may believe facts about Jesus, speak His name, and know information about Himโ€”yet still lack a living relationship with Him.ย (James 2:19) โ€œYou believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believeโ€”and tremble!โ€ย (Matthew 7:21โ€“23) โ€œNot everyone who says to Me, โ€˜Lord, Lord,โ€™ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, โ€˜Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?โ€™ And then I will declare to them, โ€˜I never knew you.'"

Jesus Himself declared this with divine authority: โ€œDo not marvel that I said to you, โ€˜You must be born againโ€™โ€ (John 3:7). This is not a suggestion. It is a requirement.

In John 3, the Spirit draws our attention to the words of Christ. Jesus speaks with heavenโ€™s certainty about the only way back to God. He is the One sent from above to save; the One who brings us to the Father through faith. Scripture testifies: โ€œFor God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting lifeโ€ (John 3:16). And again: โ€œHe who believes in the Son has everlasting lifeโ€ (John 3:36).

Faith in the Death of Jesus is Not Enough to Get to Heaven

You Must Be Born Again by the Holy Spirit

Yet in the same passage, Jesus reveals a further necessity: the new birth. He says plainly, โ€œMost assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of Godโ€ (John 3:3), and โ€œMost assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of Godโ€ (John 3:5). Then He repeats it for emphasis: โ€œYou must be born againโ€ (John 3:7).

This is the prophetic weight of the message: it is possible to profess belief and still remain unchanged. Salvation is not merely agreeing that Jesus is realโ€”it is receiving the life of God by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not merely inform us; He transforms us. โ€œnot by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spiritโ€ (Titus 3:5). And โ€œTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become newโ€ (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Therefore, hear the word of the Lord clearly: being born again is not optional. It is essential. It is the doorway into the Kingdom, the beginning of true fellowship with God, and the evidence of the Spiritโ€™s saving work in a personโ€™s life.
