Lately Iโve seen people putting down TV evangelists, and I want to speak carefully about that. I know the Lord, and I understand much of what theyโre saying. Many of these ministers are anointed, and they carry the Holy Spirit. I say this because a lot of the people criticizing them sound like the false prophets.
Yes, some of the TV evangelists ask for money. I donโt do that personally, but Scripture does say ministers have a right to be supported: โYou shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grainโย (1 Corinthians 9:9), and โthe Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospelโย (1 Corinthians 9:14). Large ministries come with large expenses, and most people donโt know what itโs like to carry huge ministry bills. I have big bills too, so I understand how financial shortage can threaten the work. If a ministry crashes because of lack, thatโs a defeatโso that may be one reason some of them make financial appeals.
When I witness, I donโt ask people for money. God supplies what I need to do what Heโs called me to doโbecause โmy God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesusโย (Philippians 4:19). Still, we should be very careful about calling these ministers โevil,โ because Jesus warned about attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to an evil spirit: โwhoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnationโย (Mark 3:29). That has eternal consequences.
What I see happening to some of these anointed evangelists is similar to what people did to Jesusโsaying He was crazy or demon-possessed because of what He said and did. Scripture records it plainly: โHe has Beelzebubโย and โBy the ruler of the demons He casts out demonsโย (Mark 3:22). There may be hurt, history, or bad blood in church circles, but Scripture shows us a better postureโlike David with Saul. Even when Saul sinned against him, David refused to touch the Lordโs anointed: โThe LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORDโs anointedโย (1 Samuel 24:6).
So, the conclusion is simple: be cautious. Yes, there are false prophets in the worldโโBeware of false prophetsโย (Matthew 7:15)โbut donโt rush to condemn people who may truly be anointed by the Holy Spirit. And remember, discernment is spiritual: โthe natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of Godโฆ because they are spiritually discernedโย (1 Corinthians 2:14).
