Godโs People Are ProtectedโDefensive Force Is Permitted, and Martyrdom Is a Choice (Hebrews 11:35)
Consider how the Swiss Guard protects the Vatican, and how the United States protects Israelโpeople identified as Godโs people: Israel as His natural people, and the Church as His spiritual people. Both are protected by military force.
This illustrates that God has, at times, defended His people through war. Therefore, if you are forced into a life-threatening situation, you may defend your life or the lives of othersโyour neighbor, your family, your friends, and Godโs people.
The presence of strong militaries protecting Godโs people suggests that God permits defensive force when necessary. God is not always calling people to martyrdom. Hebrews 11:35 indicates that some โdid not accept deliverance,โ meaning martyrdom can be a choiceโnot a command. Martyrdom depends on how much you love the Lord.
The Holy Ghost Says Donโt Lean on Your Own UnderstandingโInquire of the Lord Before You Act and Kill
God consistently commands us to inquire of Him before going to war. We should follow the example of people in the Old Testament who sought God first to know whether they should proceed. If you face hostility that threatens your life, ask God what to doโunless He has already given you personal instructions. Seek Him before taking a life.
Proverbs 3:5-6 New King James Version
5ย Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6ย In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Here are key Scriptures about inquiring of the Lord / seeking His instructionย (especially before major decisions, conflict, or battle):

Submitting to Civil Law: Let the Authorities Fight
The Lord wants to prophetically give right now His people practical instruction about fighting. He teaches that Christians are to submit to human civil law. He also shows that one way we submit to civil law is by recognizing that we donโt have to go to war ourselvesโwe can allow the governing authorities to handle it. Consider these Scriptures about submitting to civil law and letting them do the fighting before you go to war:
Romans 13:1-10 Living Bible
Submit to Government - Faith Is the Shield
1ย Obey the government, for God is the one who has put it there. There is no government anywhere that God has not placed in power.
2ย So those who refuse to obey the laws of the land are refusing to obey God, and punishment will follow.
3ย For the policeman does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you donโt want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well.
4ย The policeman is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he will have you punished. He is sent by God for that very purpose.
5ย Obey the laws, then, for two reasons: first, to keep from being punished, and second, just because you know you should.
Love Your Neighbor - Love Is the Armor
8ย Pay all your debts except the debt of love for othersโnever finish paying that! For if you love them, you will be obeying all of Godโs laws, fulfilling all his requirements.
9ย If you love your neighbor as much as you love yourself you will not want to harm or cheat him, or kill him or steal from him. And you wonโt sin with his wife or want what is his, or do anything else the Ten Commandments say is wrong. All ten are wrapped up in this one, to love your neighbor as you love yourself.
10ย Love does no wrong to anyone. Thatโs why it fully satisfies all of Godโs requirements. It is the only law you need.
Matthew 22:17โ21 (NKJV) โ โRender therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesarโs, and to God the things that are Godโs.โ
Mark 12:14โ17 (NKJV) โ โRender to Caesar the things that are Caesarโs, and to God the things that are Godโs.โ
Luke 20:22โ25 (NKJV) โ โRender therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesarโs, and to God the things that are Godโs.โ
Romans 13:1โ7 (NKJV) โ โLet every soul be subject to the governing authoritiesโฆโ
Titus 3:1โ2 (NKJV) โ โRemind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obeyโฆโ
1 Peter 2:13โ17 (NKJV) โ โTherefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lordโs sakeโฆโ
1 Timothy 2:1โ2 (NKJV) โ Pray โfor kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable lifeโฆโ
Ecclesiastes 8:2โ5 (NKJV) โ โKeep the kingโs commandmentโฆโ
Daniel 6:1โ10 (NKJV) โ Danielโs pattern of honoring civil authority, yet obeying God when laws conflict.
Acts 4:19โ20 (NKJV) โ โWhether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.โ
Acts 5:29 (NKJV) โ โWe ought to obey God rather than men.โ
A Word About Carry Permits (and Submitting to Civil Law)
Part of submitting to human civil authority (Romans 13) includes respecting the laws that govern personal protection and the carrying of firearms. If you choose to carry a handgun for self-defense, youโre responsible before God and before the law to understand what your state requiresโand to follow it carefully.
In many places, carrying a pistol may require a permit, while in other places some form of permitless carryย exists. But even where a permit isnโt required, the laws about where you can carry, when you can use force, and how you must interact with law enforcement still apply. Ignorance is not a shield in court, and it is not wisdom in the sight of God.
1) Permit requirements vary by state
Carry laws are not the same everywhere. Your state may require:
A concealed carry permit (often called a CHL/CCW/CPL).
Background checks and fingerprinting.
A minimum age requirement.
A waiting period or application processing time.
Renewal requirements and ongoing eligibility rules.
Some states recognize permits from other states (reciprocity), and some do notโso traveling with a firearm can create serious legal risk if you donโt verify the rules ahead of time.
2) Training is often requiredโand always wise
Many states require a certified course before issuing a permit. Even when training isnโt required, it is still wise and loving toward your neighbor to be trained. Good training typically covers:
Safe handling and storage.
Marksmanship and decision-making under stress.
De-escalation and avoidance.
The legal standards for use of force and deadly force.
After-incident responsibilities (calling 911, what to say, what not to say).
3) Mental and legal eligibility matters
Civil law commonly restricts firearm possession or carry for certain people, including (depending on jurisdiction and circumstances):
Certain felony convictions.
Domestic violence convictions or restraining/protective orders.
Certain adjudications related to mental health.
Active substance abuse issues.
If you are unsure whether youโre eligible, verify through official state resources or a qualified attorneyโdonโt guess.
4) A firearm is not for pride, anger, or โhurt feelingsโ
You cannot lawfully (or righteously) use a gun because someone insulted you, embarrassed you, threatened your ego, or made you angry. The untrained flesh reacts quickly, but the Spirit calls us to self-control and wisdom.
In most states, deadly forceย is only justified under strict conditionsโcommonly when you reasonably believe you face an imminent threat of death or great bodily harmย (wording varies by state). Many states also have specific rules about:
Defense of others
Defense of property (often limited)
Duty to retreat vs. stand-your-ground
Castle doctrine (home defense)
Brandishing, warning shots, and escalation
Because these standards are technical and fact-specific, you must learn them carefully.
5) Carrying means accepting responsibility
To carry a handgun for personal protection is to accept a sober responsibility: to submit to lawful authority, to train your mind and body, and to understand exactly when deadly force is permittedโand when it is forbidden.

Next, God also wants to include Scriptures showing that, when you inquire of His wisdom about what to do next, He can send angels to fight on your behalf.

3ย Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.
4ย He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5ย You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6ย Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7ย A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.
8ย Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.

11ย For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
12ย In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13ย You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14ย โBecause he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15ย He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.

Seek what God wants before you act on your own understanding. He may lead you to defend yourself, He may direct you to call the authorities to act on your behalf, or He may send angels to fight for you. Let God lead you, because the battle belongs to the Lordโnot to you.
