What Does It Mean To Be Created In God's Image?

Updated: Aug 28

Genesis 1:26-28; 2

Authorized (King James) Version

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. 15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. 19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 and the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

God's power is His word (Heb. 1:1-3/ Ps. 138:2/ Jer. 1:12/ Isa. 55:8-13). God's children have the same power as our Father God. Like the angels (Ps. 103:20), our power is our words.

Proverbs 18:21

Authorized (King James) Version

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue:

and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Matthew 12:36-37

Authorized (King James) Version

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak,

they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Proverbs 15:26

Authorized (King James) Version

26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord:

but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

Proverbs 15:2

Authorized (King James) Version

2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright:

but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

Proverbs 10:31

Authorized (King James) Version

31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom:

but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

This is why the tongue catches fire first in hell and then sets the rest of the body on fire.

In hell there is gnashing of teeth because this is what it looks like when someone's tongue is on fire.

Matthew 13:42

Authorized (King James) Version

42 and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 16:24

Authorized (King James) Version

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus,

that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

James 3

Authorized (King James) Version

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

In the Bible there are 160 scripture references to the word "tongue". In the book of Proverbs, there are 19 references. Instead of copying and pasting them here, I will write out the references for you to look at them for yourself.

Note that whenever you want to see everything that God says on a subject in the Bible, do a search of that word. For example, "Tongue". Here is a compact pasting of all scripture references in Proverbs for you to learn about using your tongue to please God. Whenever you search for a word and read all the references, it is God talking to you and your understanding will be enlightened.

As I said in the opening paragraph of this post, that God's power is His word. To speak God's word also is our avowed destiny as God's children. God's power is His Word. God's word is our power as Christians (Mt. 4:1-11/ Isa. 8:20).

God's Image Inside Mankind

Words & God's Love

The Presence of God (Agape Love)

The Ability to Talk

To be created in God's image means to have the ability to talk. Of all earth creatures, even the evil ones, we all look the same. A head with two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth with teeth and a tongue. Two arms with ten fingers, two legs with ten toes. A digestive system with the need to eat three times a day. Some are upright and some are on all fours. So, these aren't the image of God because animals have all these features. God's image is the ability to talk. Words.

With talking comes the ability to think and reason. To think God's word and to speak God's word. God's image are interior features. The mind. To think and speak. To create. The sense of fairness. Animals don't have these features.

God is love (1 Jn. 4:7, 8) and it would be compatible with God's character for us to be created in God's image with the ability to love. But animals also love and unite like humans do. But the love of God is not an animal lusts or a human lust of the flesh or feeling or emotion. I perceive God's image to be words, reason, fairness, creativity and the spiritual love of God. Animals don't have these features and though we have bodies that resemble an animal, these features set us apart from the animal kingdom. Human and animal love are lusts of the flesh not the love of God.

God's love is different than human and animal love. In Greek, God's word is the word "agape". It is what behooved Jesus to die for mankind (Lk. 22:46/ Heb. 2:17). The love of God (Rom. 5:5; 8:39/ 2 Cor. 13:14/ Eph. 3:19/ 2 Thes. 3:5/ 2 Tim. 1:7/ Ti. 3:4/ 1 Jn. 2:5; 3:1, 10, 16, 17; 4:9; 5:1-3/ Jd. 1:21).

In Greek there are also three different words to distinguish the various types of love that man expresses without God's Spirit inside of their bodies. Eros, storge and philia. Eros is the romantic & sexual love between a straight and heterosexual couple. Storge is a non-sexual family love like between parents and siblings. A brotherly love. Philia is a non-sexual love between best friends. These types of love are not the love of God.

God's love are not these human feelings or lusts of the flesh. God's love are spiritual senses, not human emotions. The agape of God are the "feelings" of the Holy Spirit inside of us once we get baptized into the Holy Spirit. God's love. The love of God. A non-human and quintessential feeling from heaven. Thus, to have the love of God inside of us through the baptism into the Holy Spirit sets us apart from the animal kingdom and makes us God's children.

Mankind is not an animal because we have the innate ability to talk. Mankind can make words. Language is God's image in us. We have to conform our words and language to the Bible; to speak Gods word. Otherwise, God wants us to see ourselves as an animal without His Spirit inside of us. Without God's Presence inside of our body through faith in Christ and the baptism into the Holy Spirit, we are no better off than the animals.

Ecclesiastes 3:17-19

Authorized (King James) Version

17 I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked:

For there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them,

And that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them:

As the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath;

So that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

Word In

Word Out

2 Timothy 2:15

Authorized (King James) Version

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,

rightly dividing the word of truth.

Put the Word into Your heart

And It Will Come Back Out Through Your Mouth

Luke 6:45

Authorized (King James) Version

45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good;

and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil:

for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

In closing. God wants to show us how to put His word on our tongues. It's called "mind renewal" in Rom. 12:2. Mind renewal to God 's word comes through the knowledge of what you learn in Bible study (Col. 3:10/ Rom. 8:29). The more you read it, the more it changes you (Ps. 119:9/ 1 Pt. 1:23).

When you see and hear the word; when you study & listen to others preach & teach the Bible (such as in church or online), it goes down inside your heart and changes you. In Pr. 4:20-27 the Holy Spirit through David tells us about that word going into our heart. Let's take his lessons.

Proverbs 4:20-27

Authorized (King James) Version

20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

21 Let them not depart from thine eyes;

keep them in the midst of thine heart.

22 For they are life unto those that find them,

and health to all their flesh.

23 Keep thy heart with all diligence;

for out of it are the issues of life.

24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left:

remove thy foot from evil.

Your Heart is the Springs of Life

(Pr. 4:23)

Proverbs 4:23

Authorized (King James) Version

{Paraphrased}

23 {Guard and protect what goes into} thy heart with all diligence;

for out of it are the issues of life.

What goes into your heart comes back out. So, guard & protect what you let into your heart.

The Ear & Eye Gates

Your Ears and Eyes are Gates to Your Heart

(Pr. 4:20, 21)

Proverbs 4:20-21

Authorized (King James) Version

20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

What you see and listen to goes into the midst of your heart and forms the way you see and think. Attend to God's word with your ears and eyes. Inclining your ear to God's words and never let God's word, the Bible, depart from your eyes. Always read your word. Study to show yourself approved to God (2 Tim. 2:15). Why?

God's Words and Sayings in the Bible

Are Life & Health for Your Body

Proverbs 4:22

Authorized (King James) Version

22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

Read vv. 20-22 and you'll see what I'm saying. God is talking about your sensory system in this passage. Your sensory system is sight (eyes), sound (ears), touch (hands), smell (nose) and taste (tongue). The five senses are all gates to your heart. God refers to two of the senses in this passage. Sight and sound. The eye gate and the ear gate. When you put the word in your heart with the ear and eye gates, it comes back out of your mouth. With the five senses we sense our way around in the natural world.

God created us in His image to create life with our words like He does. God wants us to get as much of the Bible inside of us so that it is His word that we speak, as God's children are recreated into the image of His firstborn Son, Jesus (Rom. 8:29/ Col. 3:10). We as God's children speak our Father's words like Jesus did because this is what it means to be created in God's image (Jn. 12:49, 50). Word into the heart, word out of the mouth.

Proverbs 4:24-27

Authorized (King James) Version

24 Put away from thee a froward mouth,

and perverse lips put far from thee.

25 Let thine eyes look right on,

and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 Ponder the path of thy feet,

and let all thy ways be established.

27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left:

remove thy foot from evil.

Put vv. 24-27 into context with vv.20-23 so that you understand that to remove your foot from evil begins with putting God's word into your heart through your eyes and ears. The way to put God's word on our tongues is through Bible study and listening to the word through all social media. We are created in God's image. God is all about His word. We must be all about our Father's word like Jesus was (Lk. 2:41-52).

Our purpose is to be all about our words. Our avowed destiny is to speak God's word. God's word is the power, not our words. Only He lives forever. So, we need to be conformed to His image through the word to live. Put the word on your tongue and speak it as God's child. To put the word on your tongue, first you put it in your heart through your eyes and ears. Then it comes back out through your mouth.

Note what vv. 24-27 are talking about. When you put the Bible into your heart, it comes back out through your mouth. But it also comes back out through other body parts. V. 24 says the mouth and lips. V. 25 says the eyes and eyelids. V. 26 talks about your feet and ways. V. 27 talks about your hands and foot.

When the word goes into your heart, it forms the words of your mouth and lips. It forms the way you look at life with your eyes and eyelids. It creates a new lifestyle with your feet. A reborn Christian lifestyle based on God's word, the Bible.

The narrow road to life in the Bible (Mt. 7:13, 14). A lifestyle of doing the word instead of the lusts of the hands, and keeping your foot on the straight & narrow path by removing it from the life of sin in the flesh (Rom. 8).

1 Peter 1:23

Authorized (King James) Version

23 being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God,

which liveth and abideth for ever.

Psalm 119:9

Authorized (King James) Version

  Beth ב

9 {How} shall a young man cleanse his way?

By taking heed thereto according to thy word.

When you read the Bible, you turn into the image of Jesus. The more you study it, the more it goes down into your heart and makes you like Jesus. So that when God looks at you, He sees Jesus, the word of God (Rev. 19:13).

1 Corinthians 13:11-13

Living Bible

11 It’s like this: when I was a child I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child does.

But when I became a man my thoughts grew far beyond those of my childhood,

and now I have put away the childish things.

12 In the same way, we can see and understand only a little about God now,

as if we were peering at his reflection in a poor mirror;

but someday we are going to see him in his completeness, face-to-face.

Now all that I know is hazy and blurred, but then I will see everything clearly,

just as clearly as God sees into my heart right now.

13 There are three things that remain—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

James 1:22-27

Authorized (King James) Version

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer,

he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way,

and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein,

he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue,

but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this,

To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction,

and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

To put the word on your tongue,

First put it in your heart through your ears and eyes.

And it is put onto your tongue

And comes back out through your mouth.

Our avowed destiny in Christ

Is to be like our Father God

And speak words of love and creative power.

Otherwise, God will cut your tongue out in hell.

John 6:63

Complete Jewish Bible

{Paraphrased}

63 It is the {Holy} Spirit who gives life, the flesh is no help.

The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life,

Mark 11:20-26

Authorized (King James) Version

20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

2 Corinthians 4:13

Authorized (King James) Version

13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written,

I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

Romans 4:13-17

Authorized (King James) Version

13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed,

through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

15 because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace;

to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law,

but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

17 (as it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed,

even God, who quickeneth the dead,

and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

1 John 5:14-15

Authorized (King James) Version

{Paraphrased}

14 And this is the confidence that we have in {God|}, that,

if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask,

we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

To Be Created in God's Image

Means that God is Like You

Hebrews 4:15

Authorized (King James) Version

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;

but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

God has been telling me over and over since last year what it's like to be created in God's image. So, what God showed me is you being attacked by demons and you're not a Christian yet. Just a typical person born into this world.

The demons don't like you and they mock and beat you. They're evil and they don't see anything wrong with what they do to you. But there you are feeling that they're wrong for persecuting you. You're defending yourself and looking for someone to understand.

They don't understand but then Jesus appears feeling the same way as you do about them attacking you. That it's wrong and you need help, and He fights for you. He's saying the same things as you and He sounds like you. He understands that this is wrong and helping you is right. The demons don't see it that way. But God and you are on the same page.

Jesus sounds like you with the same feelings and thoughts because you're created in His image. God is your Father. Only you among the angels are similar to Him. The same as He is. The rest just don't understand what it's like to be human. Jesus is human. God the Father and the Holy Spirit are not. But they sound like you even when you're not born again. This is because as a human being, we are created in God's image, and because man is born into sin, we are born as God's creations. Once we get born again, we become God's children.

Romans 8:9

New International Version

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit,

if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.

And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
