Foreword (Scripture Interpreting Scripture)
This study is intentionally simple: I am letting Scripture interpret Scripture—no commentary, no theology books, no outside voices. Only the Bible speaking for itself.
The goal is not to win an argument, but to let the Word define its own terms. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16), and God does not contradict Himself. So I will place the passages side by side where the Bible itself names, defines, describes, and explains the Great Tribulation, and I will let the verses build the meaning.
If a conclusion cannot be shown plainly from the text, it will not be required. If the Bible says it, we can stand on it. If the Bible does not say it, we should not treat it as doctrine. “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).
Read slowly. Compare carefully. And let the Lord’s own words carry the weight.

I’ll give you every passage where the Bible itself defines, describes, or explains the Great Tribulation, and I’ll let the verses build the meaning.
⭐ WHAT IS THE GREAT TRIBULATION — ONLY BY SCRIPTURE
1️⃣ Jesus is the one who names it
Matthew 24:21
“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”
Matthew 24:29
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened…”
Scripture’s own definition:
It is a period of suffering “such as never was.”
It ends immediately before the cosmic signs.
2️⃣ Jesus says it is Satan’s wrath against the saints
Matthew 24:9
“Then shall they deliver you up to tribulation… and ye shall be hated of all nations…”
Revelation 12:12
“Woe to the inhabiters of the earth… for the devil is come down… having great wrath.”
Revelation 12:17
“And the dragon… went to make war with the remnant… which keep the commandments of God.”
Scripture’s own interpretation:
The tribulation is Satan’s wrath, not God’s.
It targets believers, not the world.
3️⃣ It is connected to the Antichrist’s persecution
Daniel 7:21
“The same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them.”
Daniel 7:25
“He shall wear out the saints… and they shall be given into his hand until a time, times, and half a time.”
Revelation 13:7
“It was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them.”
Scripture’s own interpretation:
The Great Tribulation is the period when the Antichrist persecutes the saints.
It lasts time, times, and half a time (3½ years).
4️⃣ It is cut short for the elect
Matthew 24:22
“Except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.”
Scripture’s own interpretation:
The tribulation is so severe that God shortens it.
The elect are present during it.
5️⃣ It ends with cosmic signs
Matthew 24:29
“Immediately after the tribulation… the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light…”
Joel 2:31
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.”
Scripture’s own interpretation:
The tribulation ends with the same signs Joel gives.
These signs come before the Day of the Lord.
6️⃣ It is distinct from God’s wrath
Revelation 6:17
“For the great day of His wrath is come…”
1 Thessalonians 5:9
“God hath not appointed us to wrath…”
Revelation 7:14
“These are they which came out of great tribulation…”
Scripture’s own interpretation:
The Great Tribulation is something believers “come out of.”
God’s wrath is something believers are not appointed to.
Therefore, the two are not the same event.

The Great Tribulation: The Unprecedented Time of Trouble After the Abomination of Desolation, Cut Short for the Elect, and Ending with the Coming of the Son of Man
The great tribulation is the unprecedented time of trouble described in Scripture, beginning after the abomination of desolation and cut short for the sake of the elect, after which the Son of Man comes.
Jesus said:
“So, when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.” (Matthew 24:15–22)
The parallel account states:
“But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Daniel, the prophet Jesus referenced, records:
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.” (Daniel 12:1)
And earlier:
“And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.” (Daniel 9:27)
Jeremiah speaks of a day of unique distress:
“Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it.” (Jeremiah 30:7)
Immediately after that tribulation:
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:29–31)
In the vision given to John:
“Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you know.’ And he said to me, ‘These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.’” (Revelation 7:13–14)
The same book describes authority given for a limited period during which war is made on the saints:
“And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation.” (Revelation 13:5–7)
Scripture thus presents the great tribulation as that unique, never-to-be-repeated time of trouble tied to the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel, from which the elect are delivered and out of which a great multitude come, after which the Son of Man appears in power and glory.
Epilogue (What This Demands of Us)
After reading these passages, one thing becomes unavoidable: the Great Tribulation is not presented as a distant theory, but as a real, defined season of unprecedented trouble—connected to the abomination of desolation (Matthew 24:15), marked by persecution of the saints (Matthew 24:9), cut short for the elect (Matthew 24:22), and followed immediately by cosmic signs and the appearing of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:29–31).
And Scripture also makes a clear distinction between tribulation and God’s wrath: believers “come out of the great tribulation” (Revelation 7:14), while “God did not appoint us to wrath” (1 Thessalonians 5:9). That distinction matters, because it shapes how we read the timeline and how we prepare our hearts.
But beyond timelines, the greatest issue is readiness. Jesus did not give these warnings to satisfy curiosity—He gave them so His people would endure, remain faithful, and not be deceived. “But he who endures to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 24:13). “Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4). “Watch therefore” (Matthew 24:42).
So, let this not end as information. Let it produce sobriety, repentance, and steadfast faith. Let it drive us back to the Word, back to prayer, and back to obedience—so that whenever these things begin to unfold, we are found in Christ, rooted in truth, and unashamed at His appearing. “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming” (1 John 2:28).
